The Real Question

Have you ever asked God for direction and then second-guessed every thought that came to your mind?
“Was that Him… or just me?”
“What if I mess this up?”
“What if I’m not spiritual enough to hear God like other people do?”

If you’ve ever wrestled with wondering if it’s God speaking or just your own mind—welcome. You’re not alone. But God wants to be heard, and the Bible gives us solid ground to stand on when it comes to recognizing His voice.

The Biblical Passage: John 10:27 (ESV)

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

Jesus says His people—His sheep—do hear His voice. Not might. Not occasionally. Do. That doesn’t always mean an audible voice, but it means God still speaks—and He wants us to recognize Him.

The Breakdown: 3 Ways God Speaks

🔹 1. God Speaks through His Word
The Bible is God’s primary voice. His voice will never contradict His Word.

Hebrews 4:12“The word of God is living and active…”
Psalm 119:105“Your word is a lamp to my feet…”

Ask yourself: Does what I’m hearing align with Scripture?

🔹 2. God Speaks through His Spirit
If you know Jesus, His Spirit lives in you. He often leads through nudges, convictions, and clarity in the middle of confusion.

Romans 8:16“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit…”

Ask yourself: Does this voice draw me toward Christ or just comfort?

🔹 3. God Speaks through Peace and People
God often confirms things through the wisdom of others and a peace that surpasses understanding.

Colossians 3:15“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…”

Ask yourself: Is this prompting affirmed by spiritually mature people and producing peace, not pressure?

The Truth We Miss

We think hearing God is for the “ultra-spiritual.” But Jesus said:
“My sheep hear My voice.”
Not just the pastors. Not just the gifted.
If you belong to Him, you can hear Him too.

👉 The lie is: “You can’t hear God.”
✅ The truth is: You can—and He wants you to.

The Build: 3 Action Steps

1. Open the Word daily
Pray: “Lord, help me hear You today.”

2. Test the voice
Run it through Scripture, godly counsel, and peace.

3. Stay near the Shepherd
Regular time with Jesus helps you recognize Him faster.

The Prayer

Lord, I want to hear Your voice.
I don’t want to live my life guessing, wandering, or being led by my own emotions.
Help me recognize the voice of the Shepherd over all the other noise.
Tune my ears to Your Word.
Quiet the confusion in my mind.
And help me walk confidently, knowing You are near.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
